Opportunities under the Care Act

In March 2020, in reaction to the impact of the COVID -19 virus on the American economy and American society, the US government enacted the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act of 2020) to address the recovery of the American economy. Throughout American history, small business entrepreneurs have been the backbone of American business. Tennis has been hit extra hard, not only from an economic standpoint, but also societal, with the enforcement of the social distancing campaign. The key takeaway, however, is that these conditions, while poor at present, will ultimately yield and we as a nation will recover. Until then, we as Tennis professionals should be aware that the CARES Act applies to Tennis instructors and those who make a living in the grand profession of Tennis. In particular, the CARES Act provides for direct payments of $1,200 plus $500 per dependent child, to all taxpayers who make less than $100,000 annually or $150,000 filing joint.

The law provides specifically that those self-employed individuals, such as Tennis Instructors, can file for unemployment benefits. You should think of unemployment payments as temporary relief until we can get back to normal business.

The Act also provides incentives for small business such as low interest loans that waive traditional fees and current loan forgiveness. The following link from NPR has a great breakdown of the CARES bill and the benefits included.

The CARES Act offers relief to us in these tough times. Remember: Tennis requires great mental skills, agility and positive energy. We can look to our profession to get strength during this period. Soon the clouds will disappear, eclipsed by the sun at our local tennis courts.
