The Music City Tennis Invitational is a fundraising event for the T.J. Martell Foundation to help fund vital cancer research programs at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. The T.J. Martell Foundation is the music industry’s leading foundation that funds innovative medical research focused on finding treatments and cures for cancer. It was founded in 1975 by music industry executive Tony Martell and his colleagues in loving memory of his son T.J., who died of leukemia. It has provided more than $280 million for research at seven flagship hospitals in the United States.
The Music City Tennis Invitational is the longest-running music-related tennis charity tennis tournament in the country and has raised more than $1.6 million. Aside from serving a great cause, MCTI is a Nashville tradition of fun, competitive tennis and players of all skill levels are welcome—from beginners to pros! MCTI has been changing lives for over 40 years! Founded in 1973 by music publisher Wesley Rose of Acuff Rose Music, Helen Farmer of the American Cancer Society and leaders in the Nashville music industry and business community, MCTI continues to serve others, thanks to the ongoing, generous support of its tennis players, corporate sponsors, donors and volunteers.
Music City Tennis Invitational honors include the United States Tennis Association (USTA) 2008 Southern Charity Tennis Event of the Year, as well as the USTA 2008 Charity Tennis Event of the Year. In 2010, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean honored MCTI with a proclamation recognizing MCTI for its commitment and service to the Nashville community. To commemorate its 40th anniversary, MCTI 2013 received a proclamation from Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam commending MCTI for making a difference in the lives of Tennessee families for 40 years.
